Top 10 Awesome Villains Meme for SGF by StretchyGalFan Top 10 Awesome Villains Meme for SGF by StretchyGalFan
Having fun with another meme as a break from my current projects...

My top 10 list of animated villains:

10. Aku (Samurai Jack) - Shapeshifting demon wizard and a wonderfully over-the-top performance by Mako. I initially found him to quite annoying to watch, but he sort of grew on me after a while. Thoroughly liked the episode where he tries to tell fairy tale stories to children, and just doesn't quite get it right.

9. Mad Mod (Teen Titans) - A 1960's - themed villain + Malcolm McDowall = Pure Win in my book. Throwing in a few in-jokes to The Beatles, The Prisoner, and Monty Python doesn't hurt as well.

8. Gargoyle (Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water) - Masked supreme commander of the Neo-Atlanteans. Perfect example of the master villain who never has to get his hands dirty until the final episode, thanks to a massive army of soldiers, ships, and weird science in the alternate-universe version of 1889.

7. Megamind (Megamind) - Possibly the only Will Ferrell performance that made me forget it was Will Ferrell doing the voice.

6. Schwartzwald (The Big-O) - One of Roger Smith's most memorable foes, and first pilot of the megadeus Big-Duo. His stand-out performance was in Episode 11 of Season 1, "The Enemy is Another Big". Pity that he doesn't really have much of a role in Season 2 until Roger's final battle against the insane Alan Gabriel.

5. Lord Shen (Kung Fu Panda 2) - I only saw this as an in-flight movie this past Summer, so I was rather blown away by how wonderfully evil this character was! I originally mistook the voice to be that of Rowan Atkinson (well, Shen did come off to me as kinda "Blackadder-ish" in a way), but Gary Oldman really hit one out of the park with this role. The animation department also did a great job with bringing this character to life as well.

4. Grandis Granva (Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water) - "Miss Stormtrooper 1889". Was the villainess of the show, until the Neo-Atlanteans showed up, then did a heel turn and became an ally of the young protagonists of the series. Still, she and her fellow members of "The Grandis Gang" are a nice homage to the comedic villainous trios of Tatsunoko Productions Time Bokan anime series of the 1970s (same as the LeBlanc Gang from Square-Enix's Final Fantasy X-2 game). Besides, a red-head in charge of a transformable battle tank... What's not to love? Her character design was also had a bit of an influence on my artstyle as well.

3. Lord Alberto, The Impact (Giant Robo: The Animation) - Supervillainy never looked so cool in a suit and tie like this guy. Just watch Giant Robo Vols. 1-7 to see him being a total badass (or the Ginrei side-story videos 1-2 to see the silly version of him).

2. Hades, Lord of the Dead (Hercules) - With James Woods handling the character as if he were some sleezy Hollywood agent, instead of the Olympian god of the Underworld, Hades moves into the No. 2 slot of my all time evil favs. At times, he quickly veers into the same contemporary in-joke territory as Robin Williams' Genie from Aladdin, but there's enough of a "Daffy Duck-like" explosiveness to the Hades that I find enjoyable.

1. Leader Desslok of Gamilon (Star Blazers) - One of the few times I actually liked the dubbed performance by actor Eddie Allen better than the original Space Battleship Yamato voice by Masato Ibu. One of the biggest flaws of the live-action movie version of SBY was the redo of the Gamilus into a completely alien species, with only Masato Ibu's voice acting as "Desular" being the homage to the original character. Fortunately, it looks like the original Gamilus will be back for the upcoming Space Battleship Yamato 2199 anime TV series remake [link] so there's hope we'll get a Fuhrer Desular that's not some blue crystal CGI effect.

EDIT: Hmmm... The new "Aberto Desslar" looks a bit... Bishi. [link]

EDIT: Redid the link to the official (Japanese) Yamato 2199 website.

Man, doing this write-up took longer than working on the meme itself... ^^;

Same here, but Megamind isn't a main antagonist. I mean, he was a super villain in the beginning, but when he discovered that he's created a living nightmare, he ended up taking Metro Man's place.

"Super villain at the beginning" counts also for a few of these characters listed here, before making a "heel-turn" later in their respective series.

Nuff said.

In my book, they don't.

Desslock has my vote for the most awesome villain in anime or pretty much anywhere.

It will be interesting to see if they go with the classic version of Desslok, once the new YAMATO 2199 animated movie/TV series debuts in Japan this coming April.

Nice choices... and at least I recognize/have seen them all! (Which would probably not be the case for 80% of the young'uns attending the Animu conventions these days...)

Great list.

And you reminded me how impoverished my anime viewing experience really is -- never saw Naida, and it sounds great.

On the other hand I have seen:

Starblazers/Yamato -- Desslok/Desular deserves that top slot. Desslok! Desslok! Desslok! All hail Eddie Allen.

Giant Robo -- heh. Hunting down the subtitled VHS of those series when living in Toronto turned out to be a very rewarding experience. One of the most epic series I'd seen in recent memory.
(Personally speaking, wouldn't be surprised if he influenced my Chief Minister character on a subconscious level in terms of his look.)

Kung Fu Panda 2 -- thinking back, I can now see the Rowan Atkinson similarities you mention.

James Woods rules (pun unintended) as Hades.

Samurai Jack -- yes, the "fractured fairy tales" episode is hilarious. "...there was a little girl with huuuge flaming eyebrows" ;) RIP Mako.

Never saw the Mad Mod episodes, but I've seen clips.

So, I know most of these guys here. And now I know I have to see Nadia and The Big O -- stat! :D

Thanks, ONG! :D

Nadia is good, but titular heroine is such a misanthrope for two thirds of the series (perfect spokesperson for PETA) that you almost wished for Gargoyle to employ harsher methods to gain her cooperation much, much earlier... Beyond that, the show is suppose to be GAINAX's extremely loose adaptation of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, but ends up being one gigantic homage to tokusatsu, Gerry Anderson, anime, and more... The last 5 episodes are pure gold IMO.

The Big O - Jumping a head a bit but... : [link] It's the big battle between Roger and Schwartzwald! :D

Glad to hear it! :D

Not absolutely certain, but I think show's creators either admired, or actually worked on the BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES.

BTW, the main battle themes used in that segment are "Sure Promise" and "Stand A Chance", if you're going to search for them. ;)

Thanks for the tip. I was also not surprised to see Giant Robo was another influence.

Heh. When I realized the mecha were called deus in this, my first thought was: There's a switch -- deus est machina, rather than ex machina. ;)

Another thought: how many variations of "It's no way!"/"It can't be!"/"It's impossible!" do you think English script adapters have to come up with for when someone survives a supposedly unsurvivable attack?

It wasn't the line so much that made me think this, but that it was Michael McConnohie as Schwarzwald saying it. God knows I've heard him say enough variations on it over the years. =P

Glad you mentioned McConnohie... Schwartzwald was the first role I put voice to name with regards to the actor. I've heard him many times in the Playstation RPG games I've been through (XENOSAGA in particular).

As for deus est machina , Schwartzwald gets to call it in Season Two with the "All the world is a stage" line. ;)

According to Wikipedia, Sunrise was contracted for Batman: The Animated Series work.

Missed opportunity in later BTAS incarnations -- various people saying to/in the presence of Bruce Wayne: "OMG! It's Roger Smith!"/"Say, aren't you Roger Smith?" etc. :D

Aku was awesome! It was funny how he was fighting Jack.

Hades should really be a salesman. He can really fit it perfectly.
